The Cotton Industry joins as new co-signatories of our Joint Statement on Durability in A&F PEFCR

Brussels, January 23, 2025 -  we are thrilled to welcome the National Spanish Cotton Organization (Centro Algodonero Nacional - CAN), the National Association of Cotton Exporters (ANEA, Brazil), and Better Cotton as the latest co-signatories of our Joint Statement on Durability in the Apparel & Footwear PEFCR.

This milestone not only broadens the initiative to include plant-based fibres but also highlights a critical reality: animal fibres and materials and plant-based fibres reject the durability metrics that promote fast fashion —natural materials are durable, renewable, and essential for the transformation of fashion towards circularity.
By joining the statement, all-natural materials demonstrate their unity through shared natural origins and their commitment to promoting a responsible and circular fashion industry.

Hélène Bohyn, Policy & Advocacy Manager at Better Cotton, stated: “By supporting this collaborative effort of the Joint Statement on Durability in the Apparel & Footwear PEFCR alongside fellow Make The Label Count coalition members, we restate our concerns with the EU's proposed durability metrics. Measuring in "wears" rather than time misrepresents the actual lifespan of products and disadvantages natural fibres like cotton which are biodegradable and sustain the livelihoods of millions of people. To combat greenwashing and ensure that sustainability information in the fashion and textile sectors is fair, credible and transparent, the EU must provide relevant and accurate frameworks".

Joint Statement

"The inclusion of cotton organisations as co-signatories marks a crucial step forward, expanding our movement to plant-based fibres. This support confirms the cohesion of natural materials, united in advancing durability, sustainability, and a circular fashion industry. Together, we’re stronger in shaping a responsible future for fashion" - says Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, Secretary General of COTANCE.

Let’s address the critical issue of durability measurement in fashion and promote true sustainability by recognising the unparalleled merits of natural, renewable materials like cotton, leather, cashmere, fur, wool, mohair, alpaca, camel hair and the products made thereof.
