Scott McEwan was working as a tyre fitter when his brother got him an interview with the Scottish Leather Group. Although his brother worked in a tannery, he didn’t really know what was involved and his first day was ‘A bit of an eye-opener’. However, he has now been with the company for 27 years and continued the family connection by getting his father a job at the tannery.
Scott’s role as tannery supervisor is to schedule the batches of hides for processing to leather, ensuring that the material that needs to be processed, gets processed when it should. This is a challenging but enjoyable job. The main challenge is coordinating a team of people to get what is needed done in the most efficient way possible. However, there is always something happening during the day to keep things interesting and he says that he ‘Doesn’t get time to get bored’.
Although he left school with few qualifications, he has undertaken a considerable amount of training since joining the company, including a City & Guilds in Leather Manufacturing, the SVQ 2, Six Sigma and management training, all of which was sponsored by the Scottish Leather Group. He believes that this industry can offer a career for life for newcomers who are willing to ‘stick in’ and that progress is possible for those that want it. He is proud of his job and it is certainly better than being a tyre fitter!
