Livestock Gains Recognition: European Parliament Establishes Intergroup on Sustainable Livestock
Brussels, December 17, 2024 – The European Parliament officially established the Intergroup on Sustainable Livestock, marking a significant step forward in reinforcing cooperation with livestock farming and processing ecosystems and recognising the growing importance of this sector.
The Intergroup will serve as a vital forum connecting European policymakers with farmer representatives, livestock professionals, and partner associations of European Livestock Voice, including COTANCE.
MEP Benoit Cassart, Renew Europe, stated: “The reality on the ground that I see every day does not correspond to what is often heard in public institutions, which are often very urban-centric, such as the European Parliament. This Intergroup can help to bridge the gap between reality on the ground and our political decision-makers. Livestock farming is a considerable asset for Europe’s food autonomy and much more, so revitalising this essential sector through well-informed policies is of urgent importance.”
MEP Alexander Bernhuber, EPP, a key driver for the creation of the Intergroup, said: “This Intergroup has been created to address the need for a holistic approach to sustainable livestock farming, integrating environmental, economic, and animal welfare aspects. The sector faces significant challenges, including climate change and consumer demand for sustainably produced food. This Intergroup can help foster policies that balance these needs while supporting farmers.”
MEP Maria Grapini, S&D: “With this Intergroup, we aim to facilitate ongoing dialogue between the European Parliament, industry, animal welfare organisations, and competent authorities to ensure balanced and effective regulation supporting sector competitiveness and environmental protection for a more sustainable, efficient, and responsible livestock sector.”
For COTANCE, this development provides a unique opportunity to highlight the leather industry's role in the circular economy. Leather transforms skins and hides into value-added products, contributing to the valorisation of the animal's 5th quarter and adherence to zero-waste principles.
Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, Secretary-General of COTANCE, stated: “The establishment of the Intergroup is a crucial step in ensuring that the leather industry’s indispensable role in the circular economy is recognised. It opens a much-needed dialogue to showcase how leather contributes to sustainability and supports the principles of zero waste, while adding value to the livestock sector.”
COTANCE looks forward to working with the Intergroup and its stakeholders to promote a sustainable and competitive livestock value chain across Europe.
